Hertha Firnberg Program for Highly Qualified Female Scientists

The Hertha Firnberg Program is offered by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) to outstanding female scientists all countries of the world who are working towards a career in universities. This is a chance of a two-stage funding for a total of six years study in any universities or research institutions in Austria.

The Hertha Firnberg Program is one of three part of a career development programme by the FWF for female scientists. It aims to support women at the start of their scientific careers. The other two are the Elise Richter Programme for senior post-docs, and the Elise Richter Program for arts-based research, which aim at providing the necessary qualifications to apply for professorial positions within Austria or abroad.

The goals of the Hertha Firnberg Program are:

  1. Improvement of the career prospects for women in Austrian research facilities, and
  2. Provide very generous support during the post-doc phase for women at the start of their scientific careers or on resumption following maternity leave

The number of awards is not specified, but there aren’t many available. The length of sponsorship is 36 months (up to 12 months therefrom can be spent at research facilities abroad). The value is 64, 670 € costs per year plus 12,000 € per annum for material, travel, assistance etc.


To be eligible for the Hertha Firnberg Program, candidates must be highly qualified female scientists of any scientific discipline, who have completed their university studies.

The following requirement also applies:

  • Applicant must have completed doctoral studies. An earlier submission is possible, if it is foreseeable that the graduation will officially be completed within the application processing time (six months), and provided that all other requirements are met.
  • Applicant must have scientific publications in renown international databases

Female scientists who have already completed their habilitation (professorial examinations) are not eligible to apply. Also, researchers who have been awarded an Elise Richter position are no longer eligible to apply for a Hertha Firnberg position.

How to apply for the Hertha Firnberg Program for Female Scientists

Applications are made during the application call period, and have to be in English. Kindly visit the scholarship announcement page for complete information on how to apply for this fellowship, and also to access the Electronic application portal. If the available level of funds is sufficient there will be 2 calls for applications per year (spring and autumn) with a 6 to 8-week deadline for applications in each case. Next call is April 17 – June 2, 2017 (date of the postmark). Applications should be made within the given window.
