New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships

The New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarship (NZIDRS) was funded by the New Zealand Government and administered by Education New Zealand. The scholarship provides sponsorship for international students to undertake PhD study at a New Zealand university.

NZIDRS is open for application from students of all countries of the world into a number of host institutions in New Zealand. Citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand or Australia are not opportune to the NZIDRS scholarship. The participating host institutions are listed below:

  1. AUT University
  2. Lincoln University
  3. Massey University
  4. University of Auckland
  5. University of Canterbury
  6. University of Otago
  7. University of Waikato
  8. Victoria University of Wellington

Applicants can enrol in any desired PhD degree programmes in any discipline offered by any of the above universities. A total of 8 awards will be served under the NZIDRS program.

In terms of benefit, the NZIDRS covers the following for three years:

  • University tuition fees and associated student levies
  • An annual living stipend of NZ$25,000 (tax-free)
  • Medical insurance coverage up to NZ$600 annually


To be eligible to apply for the New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarship, you must meet all the criteria below:

  1. You must hold a minimum grade equivalent to a GPA of 3.7on a 4.0 scale OR an A to A+ average in your most recent or highest post graduate tertiary qualification
  2. You must have a confirmed, non-conditional offerof place for a (direct-start) PhD programme at a New Zealand university
  3. If you have commenced your PhD studies in New Zealand, your start date must be after 1 July 2016
  4. You must conduct your PhD study inNew Zealand (not from a distance)
  5. You must nothold citizenship or PR status in New Zealand or Australia
